Mercy Stroke Center

Stroke is a common and disabling disease. It is the third-leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of disability in adults. Better treatments are still needed to help the 750,000 patients nationwide, who suffer strokes each year. The Mercy Stroke Center is dedicated to providing the best available treatments for our stroke patients and to actively participate in clinical research designed to advance stroke care.

The goal of the Mercy Stroke Center is to provide integrated services in stroke diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.

Early intervention and emergency care
What's done in the first minutes or hours after a stroke begins may determine the level of recovery the person will achieve. That's why Mercy San Juan Medical Center treats every incoming stroke patient as an emergency. We believe that early intervention will give you the best possible chance for recovery.

Emergency
The Mercy Stroke Center is part of a city-wide network responding to acute stroke emergencies at three area hospitals. The stroke team consists of a neurologist specializing in stroke and a stroke nurse specialist. The team can be accessed 24 hours a day and responds to the emergency department, as well as any other hospital departments, for urgent patient assessment.

Emergency Department evaluation
Patients will be evaluated for possible treatment with t-PA, or evaluated for one of the stroke investigational medicines, in the Emergency Department. The emergency medicine physicians have been trained in the assessment of acute stroke patients and work in collaboration with our stroke neurologists.

Our team
The Mercy Stroke Center is a team of various specialists based at both Mercy San Juan Medical Center and Mercy General Hospital providing advanced, comprehensive care for patients with stroke. The team was developed in 1988 and includes: doctors with expertise in stroke neurology and stroke rehabilitation; registered nurses with expertise in stroke management and clinical trials; physical, speech, and occupational therapists; dietitians; case managers; and social workers. The team also relies on the excellent services of Mercy's lab, pharmacy and radiology departments.
